Tybee Island: Savannah’s Beach

Tybee’s main attraction is a wonderful beach! Facing due east, this Georgia Coast beach has been a popular vacation spot since the late 1800s. The beach is wide and clean, with warm, gentle waves. The five miles of beach are composed mostly of tiny grains of granite, washed downstream from the Appalachian Mountains. The sand is terrific for making sandcastles; it’s easy to walk on and, at low tide, to bike on.

South Beach
(14th St. south to 18th St.)
Located next to Tybee’s main business district, and within a block or two of most of the island’s hotels and motels, as well as many restaurants, bars and shops, this is the most populated beach. This section is also open to surfers. The Tybee Pier and Pavilion is a popular place to catch fish and breezes – or to get married. Public restrooms are located on the Pier and at 15th St. and Tybrisa St. Large public oceanfront parking lots are available at 14th St. and Tybrisa St.

Mid Beach
(The Curve / 1st St. south to 14th St.)
Frequented by locals and those who prefer less crowded areas, this beach offers public beach crossovers at every numbered street. There are only two popular lodging establishments and one restaurant in this area. Public restrooms are located in Memorial Park on 4th St., a half a block from the beach.

North Beach
(Savannah River south to The Curve / 1st St.)
Sheltered North Beach is located at the mouth of the Savannah River, surrounding Fort Screven. This is the perfect location for shelling, seeing dolphins, and viewing international ships as they travel to and from the Port of Savannah – one of the nation’s busiest ports. You can also see the Tybee Museum and Light Station, as well as plenty of birds at the popular North Beach Bird Viewing Area. Parking, restrooms, and outdoor/open showers for rinsing are available to the public.

Savannah River Beach
(From Lazaretto Creek to North Jetty)
This riverfront portion of the beach features low waves and dolphin spotting, and so is popular with some families. It is not as easily accessible as the other beaches, but can be reached by walking from the North Beach Lot. There are no public restrooms.

Back River Beach
(18th St. / South Jetty west to Back River Fishing Pier)
This small beach has low waves and a beautiful view of Little Tybee Island across the river. It is difficult to access, however. Limited parking and a public restroom are located at the Back River Fishing Pier just off of Chatham Avenue and at 19th St.
